Toisaalta tiiviit yhteydet synnyttivät eri puolille Itämerta kauppapaikkoja, joista on aikaa myöten kehittynyt vilkkaita kaupunkeja. Kaupungit puolestaan ovat olleet uusien innovaatioiden ja aatteiden synty- ja välityssijoja sekä kulttuurien kehityksen kehtoja. Itämeri on myös yksi maailman saastuneimmista meristä. Toisen maailmansodan jälkeisen teollistumisen huuman aikana Itämereen pumpattiin määrättömästi jätteitä niin idässä kuin lännessäkin. Paha meri kertoo elintärkeän merialueen historiasta mutta pohtii myös, millainen Itämeren tulevaisuus on niin poliittisesti kuin ekologisestikin.
