Ilmastonmuutoksesta ei tuolloin juuri puhuttu, vaikka merkkejä ikiroudan sulamisesta näkyi jo. 2010-luvun loppupuolella Haapkylä päätti tutkia, mitä pohjoisille merille oikein on tapahtumassa. Hän matkusti Huippuvuorille ja Grönlantiin ja selvitti, kuinka eteläiset merieliöt tunkeutuvat pohjoisille vesille ja syrjäyttävät arktisia lajeja. Esimerkiksi miekkavalas on siirtymässä pohjoiseen. Se saalistaa hylkeitä ja vie elintilaa muun muassa sarvi- ja grönlanninvalaalta, joita uhkaavat jäättömät olosuhteet. Myösturska ja makrilli ovat levinneet entistä pohjoisemmaksi, jossa jäämerenseitin elinympäristö on jo kutistumassa jään sulaessa. Muutokset kalalajistossa vaikuttavat tuhansia vuosia vanhaan pyynti- ja kalastuselinkeinoon. Mutta iloitsevatko grönlantilaiset, kun heidän kala-apajansa parantuvat - ainakin lyhyellä tähtäimellä?
